Alexandria VA personal property tax FAQs
How much is Alexandria VA personal property tax on a car?
The City of Alexandria’s automobile personal property tax rate is $5.33 per $100 of assessed value. The actual amount may be reduced by qualifying Personal Property Tax Relief and may be prorated when the vehicle is taxable for only part of the year.
When is Alexandria VA personal property tax due in 2026?
Existing vehicle personal property tax accounts are generally due October 5, 2026. For newly created accounts, timing can differ: accounts created on or before September 5 generally follow the October 5 deadline, while accounts created on or after September 6 generally have 30 days from billing.
How do I look up my Alexandria personal property tax bill?
The City’s Personal Property Tax search accepts either the last four digits of the taxpayer’s Social Security number plus the last six digits of the VIN, or the seven-digit tax account number plus the last six digits of the VIN.
How do I pay Alexandria car tax online?
Use the City of Alexandria Tax Portal. Search the vehicle account, verify the owner, vehicle and tax year, review the current balance and then use the City’s payment option. Save the payment confirmation and later verify that the account shows the payment.
Do I need to register my vehicle with Alexandria if I already registered it with Virginia DMV?
Yes. Registering or titling a vehicle with Virginia DMV does not replace Alexandria’s local personal property tax registration. Vehicle owners generally must register with the City within 30 days of moving into Alexandria, buying the vehicle or registering it to a City address.
What happens if I do not register my vehicle with Alexandria?
A vehicle entered into the City’s tax system more than 120 days after becoming taxable can be subject to a late filing penalty of $10 or 5% of tax due, whichever is greater, subject to the City’s limits. Failure to register within 30 days can also result in a $40 local tax ordinance citation.
What should I do after selling or moving a vehicle out of Alexandria?
Notify the City instead of assuming the account closes automatically. Alexandria provides a Personal Property Disposition Form for a sale, trade, donation, destruction or move out of the City. The City states that it will adjust the assessment after receiving the required information.
Can I appeal my Alexandria vehicle tax assessment?
Yes. Alexandria accepts vehicle assessment appeals for issues including documented high mileage, extensive body or interior damage and serious mechanical malfunction. Appeals must generally be received by December 31 of the tax year.
Does Alexandria offer personal property tax relief?
Yes. Qualifying personal-use vehicles can receive Virginia Personal Property Tax Relief on the first $20,000 of assessed value. Alexandria also has separate one-vehicle relief programs for qualifying elderly or permanently disabled residents and certain disabled veterans.
Does Alexandria tax business personal property?
Yes. Businesses may owe tax on taxable tangible business personal property. The City requires an annual business personal property return, generally due May 1, and the current-year tax payment is generally due October 5.
