West Virginia Personal Property Tax: Pay & Receipt Lookup

Pay the Tax, Find the Receipt, Keep Your Vehicle Moving

West Virginia personal property tax is not handled through one statewide county-tax payment portal. The practical path is to identify the county where the property was assessed, find the sheriff’s tax ticket, verify the correct year and installment, make the payment, and save the paid receipt.

This guide also explains what the assessor does, what the sheriff collects, the 2026 payment calendar, how a receipt works for DMV registration, why the 2.5% discount deadline differs from the motor-vehicle credit deadline, and what businesses should know about returns and property-tax credits.

Do not confuse MyTaxes with your county personal property tax payment portal. MyTaxes is the West Virginia Tax Division system and is important for state tax accounts and property-tax credits. Ordinary county personal property tax tickets are generally issued and collected through county sheriff tax offices.

Quick answer: choose your county before trying to pay

If you need to pay personal property tax or print a receipt, identify the West Virginia county where the vehicle or other personal property was assessed. Use the DMV’s official county personal-property-tax links page to reach the appropriate county system, search the ticket, verify the tax year and taxpayer, then pay or open the paid ticket.

1 Choose county Use the county where the property was assessed.
2 Find ticket Search the county sheriff tax system.
3 Verify year Check taxpayer, property and installment.
4 Save receipt Keep proof for DMV, records or tax credits.

Payment workflow

How to pay West Virginia personal property tax online

Start with the county—not MyTaxes. For an ordinary personal property tax ticket, the county sheriff’s system is generally the payment destination.
Identify the county where the property was assessed For a vehicle, this is usually the county connected with your assessment record. If you moved recently, do not assume the county from your current address is automatically the county holding the ticket.
Open the WV DMV county tax-links page The DMV maintains links to counties with online personal property tax information. Choose your county from that official list.
Open the county tax-ticket search County systems vary. Look for wording such as Tax Inquiry, Tax Search, Personal Property, Tax Ticket or Pay Taxes.
Search with the least complicated identifier available Depending on the county portal, this may be taxpayer name, account, ticket number or another county-specific identifier.
Open the correct tax year Do not pay a prior-year balance when you intended to pay the current 2026 ticket. Compare taxpayer name, year, property description and amount.
Choose the installment Determine whether you are paying first half, second half or the full remaining balance.
Review the payment screen before submitting County payment methods and any card or processor charges are not uniform statewide. Review the amount shown on your county’s checkout page.
Save confirmation immediately Record the county, tax year, ticket number, payment date, amount and transaction or confirmation number.
Return later to confirm the ticket says paid A checkout confirmation and the county’s posted paid tax record serve different purposes. When DMV renewal is close, verify that the county record has posted.

Receipt lookup micro-steps

  1. Open the correct county sheriff tax portal.
  2. Search the taxpayer or tax ticket.
  3. Select the correct personal property tax year.
  4. Open the paid ticket.
  5. Confirm the balance shows paid or zero where applicable.
  6. Use the portal’s print, receipt or PDF option if available.
  7. Save the document instead of relying on a browser history page.
No print button? County systems do not all work the same way. If the paid status is visible but the portal does not provide a usable receipt, contact the sheriff’s tax office and request an official paid receipt.

Assessment math

60% assessed value does not mean a 60% property tax

Market value and assessed value are different

West Virginia states that property is generally assessed at 60% of fair market value or of the value determined under the applicable statutory valuation method.

If property has a fair market value of $20,000, the 60% assessment relationship would produce $12,000 of assessed value before applicable levy rates are used. Your tax bill is not $12,000.

MARKET VALUE Property value 60% ASSESSED Assessment basis LEVY RATES Local taxing rates TAX TICKET Sheriff collection
Why two similar vehicles may have different tax bills: taxable value, county or district levy rates, vehicle details, assessment records and tax-year timing can differ. Compare the assessment record before assuming the sheriff calculated the wrong ticket.
Vehicle registration

DMV needs proof that personal property tax was paid

West Virginia DMV states that personal property tax is assessed by the county assessor and collected by the county sheriff. Proof of payment—or an applicable affidavit from the assessor—is required before vehicle registration renewal.

DMV Regional Office Bring insurance information, tax receipt and payment.
DMV kiosk Available at qualifying DMV Now kiosk locations.
County sheriff Some sheriffs process Class A passenger and Class G motorcycle renewals.
Refundable property tax credits

Paying the vehicle tax may create a separate state tax credit

The credit is not the same thing as paying the county tax bill. Pay the county sheriff first. The eligible credit is claimed later through the West Virginia tax-return or MyTaxes process.
Motor Vehicle Property Tax Adjustment Credit Eligible timely paid vehicle tax

Individuals, partnerships, S corporations, LLCs and C corporations may qualify for a refundable credit for personal property tax timely paid on eligible vehicle classes.

Common eligible categories published by the Tax Division include passenger cars and trucks, certain heavier trucks, motorcycles, certain buses, qualifying light trailers, antique vehicles, farm trucks, ATVs and UTVs.

Small Business Property Tax Adjustment Credit Up to 50% under qualifying rules

A qualifying small business with aggregate appraised West Virginia personal property of $1 million or less may qualify for a refundable credit based on 50% of eligible personal property taxes timely paid.

The calculation is reduced by the Motor Vehicle Property Tax Adjustment Credit already claimed where applicable.

How to use MV-1

Pay qualifying vehicle personal property tax timely Keep your county receipt because payment date and eligible vehicle amount matter.
Use the MV-1 information issued by the Tax Division The MV-1 identifies the eligible amount paid on time and provides information needed to claim the credit.
If your MV-1 is missing, use MyTaxes MyTaxes provides a “Request Another Motor Vehicle Property Tax Letter” service.
If you file a WV income tax return Use the applicable MV-1 information when claiming the credit on the West Virginia return.
If you are not required to file an income tax return The Tax Division provides a MyTaxes process for eligible taxpayers claiming only the permitted property-tax credits.
MV-1 amount lower than your receipt? The credit is based on eligible vehicle tax paid timely. It may not equal the entire personal property tax receipt.
Commercial personal property

Business equipment follows a different workflow from your tax payment

West Virginia property tax can apply to tangible personal property owned by a business. The assessment return and the later sheriff tax ticket are separate stages.

01
July 1 snapshot Ownership, use and value are generally determined as of July 1 for the next calendar tax year.
02
Property return Individuals and commercial businesses have a published September 1 return deadline.
03
Assessment The appropriate assessor or state valuation authority determines taxable value.
04
Later tax ticket County sheriffs issue most property tax tickets during the tax year.

Use the correct valuation channel. County assessors value many local commercial and personal-property accounts, while certain industrial, natural-resource and public-service property is handled under different state valuation rules.
Annual return

September 1 is also a property-return deadline—not only a tax date

Do not confuse the September 1 return with the September 1 tax installment. They are separate obligations. The return reports property for assessment; the tax payment satisfies an issued sheriff ticket.

West Virginia’s published calendar lists September 1 for returns of individuals and commercial businesses. If you are unsure whether you must file a return, ask the county assessor that maintains your personal property assessment.

Troubleshooting

No ticket, wrong county or late payment? Diagnose the problem first

No online tax ticket appears Confirm the taxpayer name, county and tax year. Then contact the county sheriff tax office if the ticket should exist.
You moved to another county Search the county where the property was assessed for the relevant tax year rather than assuming your current county holds the ticket.
DMV wants a receipt but no tax was owed Ask the county assessor whether an affidavit is appropriate for your situation.
You paid but the portal still shows a balance Keep your confirmation and contact the sheriff before making a duplicate payment.
The vehicle is not listed correctly Contact the county assessor about the assessment and DMV when the problem concerns vehicle classification or DMV records.
The payment is already delinquent Request the current payoff amount from the sheriff rather than sending the original ticket amount.
The tax ticket is in another person’s name Confirm the ownership and assessment-year facts before paying or using the receipt for DMV purposes.
You need an old receipt Search prior tax years in the county system or ask the sheriff for a historical paid-tax receipt.
Sheriff tax-office call script “I am trying to confirm a personal property tax ticket for [name] in tax year [year]. The property is [vehicle or other property]. I have [ticket/account number if known]. Can you confirm the current balance, whether payment has posted, and how I can obtain an official paid receipt?”
Delinquent-interest rule: West Virginia publishes a 9% annual interest rate on delinquent property taxes. Always obtain the current amount due instead of calculating a late payoff yourself.
Assessment problem

If the value is wrong, challenge the assessment before arguing about the bill

The sheriff collects the ticket but generally does not determine the underlying assessed value. A valuation problem belongs with the assessor or applicable state valuation authority.

Prepare before contacting the assessor

Taxpayer name and account
Tax year
Property or vehicle description
VIN or identifying information when relevant
Purchase or sale documentation
Evidence of incorrect property details
Assessment notice if one was received
Prior-year value for comparison
Property-value protests happen before taxes are due. West Virginia states that property owners generally must pursue assessment protests through the county commission sitting as the Board of Equalization and Review before the property taxes for that year become due.

West Virginia personal property tax FAQs

Most West Virginia personal property tax is collected by the sheriff of the county where the property is assessed. Use the West Virginia DMV Personal Property Tax Links page to locate participating county tax websites, then search the county ticket before paying.

How do I look up a West Virginia personal property tax receipt?
